Luchemos por la Vida turns 35!

A long time of non-profit work supported by the will, conviction, and efforts of a handful of citizens motivated by a noble cause: to prevent traffic deaths. From the beginning, Luchemos por la Vida aimed to raise awareness nationwide about the serious problem that causes 20 people to die every day in "preventable incidents," offering solutions.
Throughout the years, Luchemos' actions have multiplied. Many initiatives have been implemented during this time to reach the entire community and the government across the country. Here´s a summary of the most significant achievements:

- Continuous campaigns in graphic media, television, and radio reached everyone, young and old, raising awareness and educating people. So, Luchemos por la Vida achieved to include road safety issues on the media and the political agenda.

- 33 years of mass campaigns, observational studies, and research on local and international realities supported our calls for updated traffic laws that included mandatory helmet and seatbelt use, alcohol limits, and pedestrian priority—proposals that accelerated the passage of the new National Traffic Law 24449, which enshrined many demands. And many other legislative changes.

- Learning by traveling abroad, joining prestigious scientific organizations to know from international advances from leading institutions such as ITMA, PRI, GRSP, and, most recently, the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety. This allowed the development of our own studies that were shared at international events.

- The most advanced and successful road safety experiences were shared by Luchemos por la Vida with officials from across the country, who participated in training sessions annually in Buenos Aires or in their respective cities.

- Luchemos worked on road safety education, which had been requested to be included in the school curriculum and designed the National Road Safety Education Plan "Schools for Life." With generous private contributions, teaching materials were developed and free road safety education workshops were offered at primary and secondary levels in Buenos Aires City, Buenos Aires Province, and other cities across the country, with the participation of 135,000 students and more than 3,500 teachers and road safety educators. Since 2016, Luchemos offers a free online course on safe mobility for young people and adults, available in Argentina and the rest of Latin America.

- Luchemos was concerned about the irresponsible issuance of driver's licenses. Most drivers had not received any driver's education. Therefore, a comprehensive theoretical and practical restructuring project was presented for driver's license issuance in the City of Buenos Aires, and its authorities became interested in an innovative proposal: mandatory workshops for driver's license renewals. More than 1,170,000 drivers participated in these in-person workshops on key topics related to safe driving, designed and delivered by Luchemos from 1994 to 2008, using its own materials. This initiative continues online to this day in the City of Buenos Aires, having been adopted as a model by many municipalities to improve their licensing.

- Besides, theoretical and experiential driving and safe mobility courses for drivers and chauffeurs were developed. Companies across the country entrusted their thousands of employees, hiring Luchemos' services and contributing financially to all the non-profit work this Association performs.

Luchemos por la Vida turns 35 years old. A long period of intense and fruitful work, led for 33 years by its founder, but which we continue today. In these decades, many important achievements for road safety were made. And also many frustrations. Luchemos is grateful to the volunteers, collaborators, and companies that supported and continue to support this cause. Special gratitude to our beloved founder, Alberto José Silveira, an idealist and tenacious fighter for this struggle for 33 years.
Argentine road safety has evolved in many ways over this time. Meanwhile, a growing number of families of victims and volunteers join this fight every day because thousands of people continue to die each year in Argentina. Much remains to be done to achieve zero traffic deaths. And this is everyone's task. Let's commit our hands to this sowing of life.
The fight continues!
